The Literature Department at the McNamara School is dedicated to teaching students to analyze literature on a college level. The emphasis is no longer on grammar or writing. We feel that students should gain these skills from earlier grades and should be prepared with the grammar tools that they will need to succeed upon entering the school. The Department focuses on reading material that has had a large impact on various societies. Responses and essays on the readings will help to build students' writing skills, so it is superfluous for the curriculum to include material on writing and grammar. David Putnam is a literature expert with a strong concentration on historically-significant texts. The Literature Department, along with the History Department, are the two most significant Departments at the McNamara School.
